Scientific error upends major ocean warming study

Apparently you’re a ‘climate contrarian’ if you dare to check the claimed results of climate-related studies. The researchers ‘calculated heat based on the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide rising off the ocean, filling round glass flasks with air collected at research stations around the globe’. But now they admit this ‘novel method’ didn’t work out the way they first thought, having had the error pointed out to them.

Hate Crimes Against Muslims Increased in 2017

Fbi hate crimes 2017 2011 infogAs is always the case, the question is two-fold: are there numerically more hate crimes occurring? Or are we better at reporting the ones that are occurring?

Hate crimes against Muslims increased slightly in 2017 compared to 2016, according to newly-released statistics by the FBI.  In addition, since 2014, religiously-motivated hate crimes have been on the rise from a low of 1,140 reported in 2014 to 1,749 reported in 2017.

However, the FBI said the increased numbers in reported hate crimes is partially due to the fact that more police departments are sharing hate crime information with the federal agency.

As with previous years, the number of hate crimes reported against Muslims represented a fraction of the number of hate crimes against Jews.

In 2017, hate crimes against Jews represented 58.1 percent of all religiously-motivated hate crimes, by far the largest group. Second were hate crimes against Muslims, which represented 18.6 percent of religiously-motivated hate crimes.

In real numbers, that translates to 325 reported hate crimes against Muslims in 2017 and 1,016 reported against Jews.

Shocking New Info: Boston Bomber Court Documents Unsealed

USA Boston Marthon Youngest Victim Martin Richard Andrew Burton Getty 1024 600Court documents just unsealed from the trial of Boston Marathon bomberDzhokhar Tsarnaev revealed that Tsarnaev allegedly told a college classmate that his brother Tamerlan “had committed jihad” through his involvement in a previous triple murder.

The case involved the murders of Raphael Teken, 37, Erik Weissman, 31, and Tamerlan’s friend Brendan Mess, 25 on Sept. 11, 2011. According to federal prosecutors, the three “were bound, their throats were cut, and at least one of them had marijuana sprinkled over his body.”

Recently unsealed court documents revealed that Dzhokhar’s college roommate Dias Kadyrbayev, 24, told his lawyer that Dzhokhar had told him that Tamerlan was involved in the murders, which Dzhokhar referred to as “jihad.”

Kadyrbayev was charged with obstruction for removing a backpack, laptop, fireworks and other incriminating items from Dzhokhar’s dorm room at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth after the bombings.

Kadyrbayev offered to testify against Dzhokhar in exchange for leniency. Dzhokhar’s lawyers wanted the jurors to hear Kadyrbayev’s testimony as part of their strategy to paint Tamerlan as the driving force behind the bombings. However, the testimony was nixed from the trial after prosecutors objected and the judge agreed.

Tamerlan and Dzhokhar planted the bombs that killed three and injured several hundred people in 2013 at the Boston Marathon.

Justices to hear antitrust case over sale of iPhone apps

And this is where we get back to crony capitalism (a.k.a. “crapitalism”, “crony capitalism”,  “corporatism”, “democratic capitalism”).

Apple makes a superior product.

All the other companies ask the government to stop them and bolster those companies who cannot compete.

“It’s not fair that Apple has the superior cellphone”.

This is similar to the antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft back in 2001

Wicked Microsoft.

But before any kind of antitrust actions had even started, Apple turned the tide.

This goes back to Obama’s “too big to fail” mantra.

There’s no company too big to fail; no company too small to succeed.

WASHINGTON – Apple is at the Supreme Court to defend the way it sells apps for iPhones against claims by consumers that the company has unfairly monopolized the market.

The justices are hearing arguments Monday in Apple’s effort to end an antitrust lawsuit that could force the iPhone maker to cut the 30 percent commission it charges software developers whose apps are sold exclusively through Apple’s App Store. A judge could triple the compensation to consumers under antitrust law if Apple ultimately loses the lawsuit.

Apple says it doesn’t own the apps or sell them. That’s the responsibility of software developers.

But the lawsuit says the Cupertino, California-based company exerts a lot of control over the process, including a requirement that prices end in .99. And iPhone apps are only available through the App Store.

Pelosi’s opponents counting on chaos to deny her speakership

If anyone knows how to create chaos, it’s the Dems.

Those Democrats trying to stop California Rep. Nancy Pelosi from reclaiming the job say they don’t need a rival candidate just yet. Instead, they plan to show that Pelosi lacks the votes to win the race. And then, they say, new challengers will emerge.

It’s strategy that has other Democrats cringing at the prospect of their new House majority in disarray. They say voters swept them to office in this month’s elections to govern, not become bogged down by the kind of Republican infighting that sent Ohio Rep. John Boehner to an early exit as speaker and weakened his successor, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan.

The last thing they want is a floor fight over the leadership post when Congress opens work in January.

“If the first Democratic value they see is chaos, I don’t think that’s very good,” said Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., who recently wrote an op-ed with colleagues supporting Pelosi. “I don’t think it’s a good look at all.”

100 years ago in Spokane: Spanish Flu Outbreak

I’ve always been intrigued by the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918. Of those who contracted the flu, 20% died. 50-100 million died worldwide — about 5% of the entire world’s population, over the course of a year.

This happened during WWI, and the massive troop movements likely led to the spread and hastening of the pandemic.

There are some excellent resources available about the Spanish Flu. Probably the best I’ve read is John M. Barry’s The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History.

There have also been some great articles in the Spokesman Review’s “100 Years Ago Today” series that discusses the effect of the Spanish Flu on the Palouse.

Barry believes that the virus actually originated in Kansas.

Mexico to up security at border after migrants try to cross

They should have done this at their southern border and not wait for them to get to TJ.

TIJUANA, Mexico – Mexico looked set to shore up security near its border with the United States on Monday, as police lined up outside a shelter in the city of Tijuana and told Central American migrants they couldn’t walk toward the border area.

Mexico’s National Migration Institute said that 98 migrants were being deported after they tried to breach the U.S. border, and U.S. agents fired tear gas into Mexico to stop them. Mexico’s Interior Department said about 500 migrants were involved in the attempt to rush the border, while U.S. authorities put the number at 1,000.

Mexican officials said the migrants had taken part in “violent” chaos, which originally began as a peaceful march to appeal for the U.S. to speed processing of asylum claims for Central American migrants marooned in Tijuana.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said on a call with reporters that 69 migrants who tried to cross the border illegally were arrested on the California side.

Protesters line up to stop cleanup at Spokane City Hall homeless camp

I love this. Announce you are going to clean camp, and watch the liberals come out in droves. They stand in the freezing cold and rain for naught: no one shows up. Brilliant.

And he has a weekend long hunger strike? We normally call that a fast. Big deal.

People gathered. Arms linked. A wall formed. But there was nothing to stop.

In the freezing-cold early-morning hours Monday, about two dozen activists assembled with a small group of homeless people to block code enforcement from clearing out a homeless encampment outside City Hall near the Spokane Tribal Gathering Place. The protest was organized after a notice was posted at the camp by the Spokane Police Department Saturday saying the city planned to clean Monday morning if not previously cleared away.

Expecting them to arrive at 9:30 a.m., the group formed a human chain around the camp and waited. But code enforcement didn’t show.

“I’m not going anywhere,” said Alfredo LLamedo, who last Monday แอดไลน์รับเครดิตฟรี 50ended a weeklong hunger strike at the camp in support of homeless rights. “If they want to clean up trash, be my guest. But what’s ironic about that, they all of the sudden decide to come out here.”

Q&A on scientist’s bombshell claim of gene-edited babies

5515483162382880795“Grossly premature and deeply unethical,” is how noted U.S. bioethicist Henry Greely of Stanford University characterized the claim.

Designer babies might be here sooner than anyone reckoned. A Chinese researcher who says he created gene-edited babies crossed what most scientists consider a forbidden line.

It’s not clear if the claim is true and if so, how the twin girls whose DNA reportedly was altered will fare as they grow.

There is wide scientific agreement that rewriting DNA before birth – to prevent an inherited disease or to give a baby some “designer” trait – isn’t yet safe to try outside laboratory experiments that do not lead to human births.

Early November vs. Now

Early November: Trump and the right is using the caravan to stoke irrational fears for political gain! Now: These peaceful rock-throwing refugees are being crushed by Republicans and their oppressive immigration policies which Obama didn’t do in 2013 because shut up racist.
